Matrix from Seachem is a high porosity biomedia that provides biofiltration for the efficient removal of nitrogenous waste. Matrix is about 10 mm in diameter, and a porous inorganic solid. Each litre of Matrix provides as much as 170 litres of plastic balls. Plastic bio-materials provide only external surface area, whereas Matrix typically provides both external and internal microporous surface area. These macropores are sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying of bacteria. This allows Matrix to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter. Matrix will not breakdown and will never need to be replaced, as the majority of the bacteria are internal Matrix may be rinsed when needed without damaging the filter.
